Ayurveda
Ayurveda (Devanagari: आयुर्वेद ) or ayurvedic medicine is a form of alternative medicine in use primarily in the Indian subcontinent. The word "Ayurveda" is a tatpurusha compound of āyus "life" and veda "knowledge", and would roughly translate as the "Science of Life". Ayurveda deals with the measures of healthy living, along with therapeutic measures that relate to physical, mental, social and spiritual harmony. Ayurveda is also one among the few traditional systems of medicine involving surgery.

Bhu Mata
The ancient Vedic sages viewed the Earth[Bhu Matha - Mother Earth] as a divine goddess, a being who had feelings and consciousness, and who responded to our prayers and actions. The sages sang beautiful hymns of gratitude to Mother Earth, wished her peace in rhythmic peace prayers, and also performed elaborate fire ceremonies for her peace and happiness.

Jyotish
Jyotisha (jyotiṣa, in Hindi and English usage Jyotish) is the Hindu system of astrology, one of the six disciplines of Vedanta, and regarded as one of the oldest schools of ancient astrology to have had an independent origin, affecting all other schools in and around India. The Sanskrit word derives from jyótis (disjointed as "Ja"+"Ya"+"O"+"T"+"ish" to get the root meaning as "water or birth"+"in addition to" + "earth" and "stars" + "knowledgeable" equating as one who is knowledgeable, or enlightened with knowledge, of birth, fate, and relationship to water, earth and stars) or which means "light, brightness", but in the plural also "the heavenly bodies, planets and stars".

Virechana by Vedic Society

Virechana is one of the 5 karmas or actions in Panchakarma. It cleanses the body of toxins in the Pitta zone by drawing the toxins (ama) back to the small intestine through the bodily channels and then eliminating them downwards (sometimes they even go upwards subsequenting in vomiting at the same time). If done correctly it is one of the most profound and powerful healing technologies in existence in the entire universe. Pitta is related to all metabolic and transformative operations in the body, from digestion, to seeing to properly building bodily precursors and tissues. There are 13 agnis, 5 in the liver, 7 in the gap between the tissues and one in the stomach. Once Virechana is done correctly, all 13 burners or agnis are cleansed. It is used in Ayurveda to treat 100's of diseases as it goes to the very root of any metabolic disorder. It is good to do even if there is no major disease as it cleanses the cellular intelligence in the entire body. Here we have documented the Virechana procedure "as it is" right from Charaka Samhita. Enjoy! With Love. Vedic Society Team

VIRECHANA

If the roga (disease) & rogi (patient) is fit for Virechana (therapeutic purgation), then Deepana Pachana Aushadhi (digestively enhancing medicines) are given as per the agni (digestive capacity) of the person for 3 days, 3 times before food. For Deepana pachana (enhancing digestive power), Trikatu choorna (a famous Ayurvedic formula containing 3 pungent substances, ginger, pippali and black pepper) or jeerakadi choorna (another classical formula based on cumin or jeera) can be given if not chitakadi vati (a classical digestive tablet) can be given. At that time laghu ahara (light diet) should be taken.

After assessing the agni (digestive power), Hrsiyasi matra of Ghrta is to be given (30ml) in the morning when sun starts to rise, the time is noted. The patient has to be given an introduction regarding the observance of the digestion of ghee. He has to drink hot (not luke warm) water continuously sipping it. If he gets the Udgara (burping) without the smell of ghee, then the time is noted. This indicates that complete digestion of the ghee has taken place.

After digestion of ghee he can take laghu Ahara (light diet such as watery rice gruel or kitcherie also watery). He should avoid divaswapna (day sleep) & ratrijagarana (night awakening). By counting the time taken to digest the Hrsiyasi matra of ghee, the koshta (stomach) is assessed the next day dose is increased as per koshta.

The snehapana (oral intake of medicated ghee) should be done minimum of 3 days & maximum of 7 days. If the snehapana continued after 7 days that will become satmya for the body. (This means after 7 days there is no further benefit as it does not have the required effect of bringing toxins back to the digestive system).

Then samyaksnigdha lakshana (signs of saturation of the oily substance) is observed in the patient. The samyak snigdha lakshana are adhastaat snehadarshanam (snigdhata seen in mutra , purisha). [This means the signs are that oiliness should be seen in the stool of the patient and also in the urine]. Also oiliness found in the skin, patient feeling as if body is smeared with oil.

Next three days the abhyanga sweda (external oil application followed by steam bath) is given in the morning. The food should contain Pitta utkleshakara guna (of a pitta aggravating quality means quite spicy but no nightshades!), for after noon & evening of 3rd day. Next day morning Abhyanga sweda is given.

By assessing the koshta, Virechana Aushadhi is to be given. After Aushadhi virechanopaga dravya like Triphala qwatha can be given. The patient is instructed to drink(Hot/cold) water sufficiently according to the property of the Virechana Aushadhi.

When the virechana material contains kapha (sticky, slimy mucus) it is the indication of completion of the process. The person should take rest if he is not feeling healthy.

In the evening he has to take manda (rice water).

The process of shudhi can be inferred by the quantity of purged material or number of times he passed. The samsarjana karma (post operative procedure) has to be followed as per the shuddhi lakshana:

  • MANDA (rice water)
  • PEYA (thick rice water)
  • VILEPI (thicker rice water)
  • AKRTA YUSHA, KRTA YUSHA (vegetable soup)

If pravara shuddhi each 3 meals, Madhyama shuddi each 2 meals, Avara shuddhi each one meal has to be taken.

This is the procedure of VIRECHANA as per charaka Samhita.
